So, most people here probably play Magic, but I'm curious if anyone has played or currently plays its twisted little brother, Hecatomb?

I discovered the game right around my last birthday (which is right around Halloween, oddly enough), and immediately fell in love. I might even like it more than Magic. The product is now quite cheap, since the game was discontinued (in 2006), and most dealers are just trying to get rid of it, with a few hold-outs wanting to sell high still.

The game had a total of less than 300 cards released, including all three sets and a handfull of promos. The expansions go for about $10 a box of boosters, and promos are fairly rare.

Finally, not too long ago, WotC released a pdf of what would have been the final set. Unfortunately, the cards aren't put together in the pdf, its just a spoiler of the text and art.

So, anyone a fan of Hecatomb?

Saw a deck once... looked interesting enough. The fact that it targets virtually only teen+, unlike magic (which any 8-year-old could pick up), was probably a contributing factor to its demise.

Indeed, the relatively narrow target audience didn't help matters, but there were other things. Some say there was a lack of real support, as far as advertising or prizes. I wasn't around then to see that.

The cards are a real pain to store; they don't fit into normal cardboard boxes like other card games. But as tough as the cards are, you don't feel bad playing with them unprotected or just wrapping a rubberband around them for storage. I've even thought about using some of the less useful cards as coasters. :)

Yeah, those were really durable. And you had to make your own pentagonal box. Or, if you were really stylish, you made yourself a wicked hollow Pentagram box.

I discovered Hecatomb at roughly the time it died. It's a shame, because it looked really cool. I loved the mini novel that was on the website. Very cool concept for a game, witch is probably why Wizards killed it.

Spend enough time around me, and you will discover just how deep and vitriolic my hatred for WotC is.
