Not gonna lie, I feel the urge to debate this. I feel you're being biased just because of the extreme nature of black metal, tbh.

Oh man, what can I say? This is some serious fucked up shit!! And moronically unoriginal too. Black Sabbath (my favourite band) were pioneers of the gloom and doom sound, with images of blackness and darkness, haunting themes and lyrics and so forth.
While Sabbath may be one of my favorite bands, I'm going to argue that being the first at something doesn't make one the best at something. I mean, look at Iron Maiden. They may have been one of the first speed/power metal bands. But I think they're mediocre as hell, tbh. I can only really listen to their songs here or there, or when they're covered by other bands; like Iced Earth (a better speed/power metal band, IMO) or Children of Bodom.

That was in the late 60's folks!!! And dumbass shithead bands like this can do nothing except do a pathetic copy with sombre music in minor chords and keys, dress in black with dark makeup, singing sombre themes, and sprinkling occult images in their tacky black and white videos.
"Dumbass shithead bands"? "Pathetic copy"? No offense, but these statements are all terribly biased. And there's nothing inherently wrong with dressing in black and white, and carrying sombre and occult themes. It adds to the dark image of the music, and enriches the experience.

This song is such a huge heap of shite. My wife listened to the "vocalist" (for want of a better word) and after about 5 secs said "I've heard enough". The vocalist sounds like a dog with a chicken bone caught in its throat. Bloody terrible. Stupid bunch of amateur posers. Should be burnt at the stake.
lolbias
No offense, the problem here is not that the genre is "shite", it's that you simply don't understand the genre; it's musical aims are flying right over your head here.
If I may quote from me and LDB's debate for english class...
Screaming in metal serves a purpose: metal is not a genre that is based around creating short, catchy songs one can dance to, like many other genres out there. Metal is a genre that focuses on creating a specific mood, a specific atmosphere, and holding that for a whole album.
And that's where harsh vocals (also called guttural or screamed vocals) come in. Screamed vocals are meant to further the harsh atmosphere of a metal album. Anyone can scream, sure, but in order to produce a convincing black metal shriek or death metal growl, it takes a lot of straining and control over one's voice, lest the singing come out sounding wheezed, forced, and lacking in emotion.
So yeah. Harsh vocals may be a more abrasive style of vocals than you're used to, but by
no means are they less valid than clean vocals.

I'm not against so much unoriginality, but the damn awful bastardisations. You know, like Black Sabbath inventing the dark genre of music. Then came Alice Cooper with similarly dark themes, but well done. But if you're going to copy, don't go way left field and do some bizarre arty farty super dooper extreme version of it that resembles nothing in the end. And don't do it tacky. Like the creepy make up, black and white video, occult/skull symbols (how thoughtlessly unoriginal) etc. Do it tastefully and thoughtfully.
I don't feel that "extreme" equates to "tacky" at all. Some people have a higher tolerance for harshness in their music, some people have a smaller margin of tolerance. Black metal is merely music crafted for the former category of people.
At the risk of sounding like an elitist, I'd argue that this isn't the fault of the genre, but the fault of the listener: one of the things that sets metal music apart from other genres is its disregard for the mainstream, and the standards other genres hold. One cannot simply expect a metal band to sacrifice artistic integrity, or water down their sound to make it more digestible for an “average” music listener.

Now, here is a great example of a couple of guys that get it right. I've just heard this on a music program called "Rage" here in Australia. These 2 guys call themsleves Jackson Firebird and this song is called 'Bottle Bin'. It is a raw and gutsy blues rockabilly song. For sure, a genre that's been in existance for like forever. Here is the youtube clip:
<clip>
Firstly, the song itself is fucking fantastic!!! Unoriginal like there's no tomorrow for sure. But still, a great performance. Strong hints of Led Zeppelin in some of the slide riffs. Now, these guys know how to do it right.
And secondly, the video clip. Just because it's a traditional raw blues song doesn't mean there has to be a Ford pickup, or a farmhouse, or a corn field, or some black fellas sitting on the front porch with a mangy dog. This is a good and simple video clip that these guys have made their own, that compliments their superb song.
That's my rant and I'm sticking to it.
Tbh, I'd argue that the black metal song is better, as I really loathe blues. Down and Sabbath are the closest I've ever come to liking anything "blues".
I wouldn't call it "shite" though, or "tacky", merely because I don't like it. Merely that I am not the target audience, which is what I wish people would realize when discussing extreme metal like black metal.
