That's what I've done most of my life, and still do in the main. Long johns are bulky and I hate the fact that they look like something a grandpa would wear. Just horrid. The plain ones anyway. Then of course there's the specialist ones like they sell in ski shops (eg, Damart) but they cost an arm and a leg.
