My team is:

Level 19 Kadabra
[Teleport / Confusion / Disable]

Level 19 Geodude
[Magnitude / Selfdestruct / Rock Throw / Rock Smash]

Level 19 Luxio
[Tackle / Leer / Spark / Bite]

Level 19 Staravia
[Double Team / Endeavor / Quick Attack / Wing Attack]

Level 22 Prinplup
[Metal Claw / Growl / Bubble / Peck]

Level 19 Gastly (got in a trade)
[ Lick / Confuse Ray / Night Shade / Curse]

I think my team's looking pretty decent so far. What does everyone else think?

It really depends on the IVs.

However, Staravia will help you a whole lot, so make sure you keep it on your team. Geodude won't do much for you, so it would be better if you replaced him with an HMWhore (Bidoof works fine [Surf,Strength,Rock Smash, etc]). Kadabra/Prinplup/Gastly will all turn into good things. Luxio, however will end up not doing much for you halfway through the game.

I've been keeping Geodude, mainly for the fact that in all the previous games I've played, Golem has been pretty helpful in beating the Elite Four, due to Magnitude and Earthquake being as strong as they are. As for an HM-whore, I've been saving a Level 4 Budew in my box, that knows Cut right now. :P

I've been doubting Luxio though. Even this early on in the game, despite it being the same level as everything else, it's always been behind, power-wise. I plan on switching it out for a better electric Pokemon.

Ah. Main thing that I dislike about Golem is the crappy speed and crappy special defense. The special defense part would be fine if he was fast enough, but nope. Budew is an okay HMWhore, not that good though. Bibarel can learn all HMs except Fly, which makes it very valuable compared to Budew only being able to learn Cut.

Yeah, Luxio quickly falls behind.

Yeah. It would be best if you had EVs/etc though.

Hmm... I remember reading about those. How would I keep track of them?

You have to keep track on pen and paper or on a computer. :(

Or you can just tell me the stats and I can rate from there.

Dragonbreath is a really really bad move to have on him due to his craptastic special attack. If you are able to evolve him, that would be a good addition...otherwise you could find an alternative.

Attack of the one-type moveset! (kidding
I would replace most of those moves with a more varied moveset. Sure you can hit hard with water...but what if you come across anything else? Water moves normally do good with ice attacks, so I would try to find a way to get rid of some of the moves. Also, remove waterfall and give it to Gyarados and give this guy the Surf. Surf is a special move, so it would be better on the guy who has a good special attack rather on a pokemon who can't use it as well.

Pin Missile should be replaced here. Other than that, seems okay for now.

As said before, get rid of surf for waterfall. Dragon Rage is a horrible horrible move after you move past where the enemies are level 20. Also, Fire Blast and Hydro Pump are both special attacks, which Gyarados has a 61 in. His attack, however is 118, which is kinda bad for a Gyarados, but much much higher than his pathetic special attack. I would replace the Fire Blast/Hydro Pump/Dragon Rage for Ice Fang/Earthquake/Stone Edge/Body Slam/SOMETHING physical.

Quick question; do you know where I would get the TMs of the moves you recommended for Gyarados?

Man, I feel so old, reading this. I don't have the later games, I'd stick with my r/b/y and g/s/c. You guys have fun. I wish they would of stopped at Crystal, but what do I know, so. Just a nostalgic nut, I am.

RBY/GSC are HORRIBLE competitively. RSE/DP are way way way more balanced (with DP far behind RSE). Plus, there isn't really a reason for them to stop. The designs of the new pokemon are still good, they are still getting money, and they are still keeping things in line.

What reasons are there for them to stop?
