Hi everyone. I like to share a drink with my old man, (wife's not a drinker- no one's perfect) and I buy every now and then some alcohol when I visit my folks (my dear mum uses vodka as a face treatment-but that's another story).

Sometimes I buy beer, sometimes wine, sometimes liqueur, port, vodka, brandy and whisky. The only whisky that I ever bought was the trusty old Johnnie Walker red label. In the last 2 years, a new alcohol store (Dan Murphy's-Australia) opened up in place of a supermarket, where my folks live. It's a massive store, and it really opened my eyes to the incredible variety of alcohol. I noticed especially the huge variety of whiskies, brands that I hadn't heard/seen before.

So, I started buying some other whiskies, such as Canadian Club, Dimple etc. Some different blend whiskies. Also, I didn't even know Johnnie Walker had any other whiskies other than red and black labels. But this store also sells the green, gold and blue label. I also noticed a large range of single malt whiskies, and I recently joined a whisky forum to find out all the ins and outs of these upper market whiskies.

I recently bought my first single malt whisky, Cragganmore 12 yrs. It was delicious!! So smooth and aromatic, full of lovely flavours. So different to the cheap and raw alcohol burn and no flavour sensation of whiskies I had drunk before. But of course it comes at a price. I can pick up a 750ml Johnnie Walker red label for about $30 and the black label for $40. The Cragganomore was the most expensive whisky I've bought so far at $76 for a 700ml bottle.

But I really love these upmarket single malt whiskies, as opposed to cheaper blend whiskies. I'm looking forward to trying a different one with each purchase. My next one will either be a Glenfiddich solera reserve 15yrs or a Talisker 10 yrs. I haven't decided yet. The Glenfiddich is a soft, mellow, gentle whisky whilst the Talisker is a strong, spicy, peat and smoke whisky.

So, anyone else like whiskies? What are your favourites?

Wisers is a Canadian whisky apparently. I've never seen that here in Australia, and I haven't heard of Gibsons. I did buy a bottle of Canadian Club 12yrs for my dad, and I thought it wasn't a bad drop.

Well, we're finally talking about whisky in my whisky thread.  Go figure!! Instead of talking about whisky and other alcohol in the thread about men who have worn tights.

Seriously though, Jameson's or Crown Royal. Canadian Club is good too.

I still say rum is way better though.

So, I had some Captain Morgan's Spiced Rum earlier and wasn't a huge fan. Is it more of an acquired taste, or is there a different brand I should try?

Captain Morgans isn't the greatest I've tried. Gosling's Black Seal, or Sailor Jerrys spiced rum (especially the latter) is the way to go.

Captain Morgan really isn't the pinnacle of good rum. I've never been that big of a fan myself, but I think the Captain image with my face photoshopped on it gives a good idea as to my character. Or lack thereof.

As Butt said (then again, he's going by what I drink :P ), Gosling's is a good dark sipping rum made in Bermuda. Sailor Jerry is a 92 proof spiced amber navy rum. Lamb's makes some ok grog too. There really are lots of different rums. Rum made from Demerera sugar gives a different taste entirely than the other sugars commonly used. El Dorado is a demerera rum that I've tried. It was good, but it has a lot of balls. Pusser's Navy Rum also recieves my seal of approval. Having said that, I'd rather drink cat's urine than Bacardi, and the occasions where I've tried Dominican rum, I've found that it's smell resembles that of industrial pesticide. So I have encountered rum I dislike. All in all, after half a twixer, it all goes down the same no matter what the brand.

Give dark rum a try. It has alot more flavour than amber or white.

Okay, cool. I'll try some of those next time I get the chance. It probably won't be for quite a while, though. :(

You know, I haven't had rum for so many years I've forgotten what it tastes like! I might have to pick up some. But I do have a nice little of good quality single malt scotches going. 7 bottles so far which I'm going to use as a display on top of my buffet.
